This paper presents an inscription incised before firing on a handmade coarse ware fragment discovered at Falerii, Vignale, one of the two hills on which the ancient city stood. Although fragmentary, difficult to read, and uncertain in terms of analysis and interpretation, the inscription may represent a document of potential significance for the history of literacy in the Faliscan region and, more broadly, in ancient Italy. Its potential importance lies in its chronology, as it may constitute the earliest known inscription in Faliscan – or, more cautiously, from the Faliscan territory.

Abstract
This paper presents an inscription incised before firing on a handmade coarse ware fragment discovered at Falerii, Vignale, one of the two hills on which the ancient city stood. Although fragmentary, difficult to read, and uncertain in terms of analysis and interpretation, the inscription may represent a document of potential significance for the history of literacy in the Faliscan region and, more broadly, in ancient Italy. Its potential importance lies in its chronology, as it may constitute the earliest known inscription in Faliscan – or, more cautiously, from the Faliscan territory.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
