La ferrovia Civitavecchia-Orte: un patrimonio in bilico tra abbandono e progetti irrealizzati

This research examines the Civitavecchia-Orte railway line, built between 1922 and 1929 and officially decommissioned in 2011—an infrastructure largely abandoned today but still clearly traceable within the landscape, rich in historical, technological, and environmental significance. Following a historical overview of its conception, development, and decline, the study presents an in-depth survey of the line’s infrastructures and railway buildings, with particular attention to their typological, structural, and decorative features. The analysis, conducted through direct surveys and archival documentation, highlights the varied state of preservation of the buildings and the presence of distinctive architectural details. Building upon this body of knowledge, the research proposes a restoration and adaptive reuse strategy aimed at enhancing the railway as a cultural and landscape infrastructure, through its transformation into a cycle and pedestrian route (greenway) and the conversion of stations into cultural hubs and facilities for sustainable tourism. Ultimately, the research stresses the need for a unified and timely approach based on thorough knowledge and integrated conservation, recognizing the railway as a valuable opportunity for cultural and landscape regeneration.

Il contributo si sofferma sulla linea ferroviaria Civitavecchia-Orte, costruita tra il 1922 e il 1929 e ufficialmente dismessa nel 2011: un'infrastruttura oggi in gran parte abbandonata, ma ancora chiaramente rintracciabile nel paesaggio, ricca di significato storico, tecnologico e ambientale. Dopo una panoramica storica sulla sua concezione, sviluppo e declino, lo studio presenta un'indagine approfondita delle infrastrutture e degli edifici ferroviari della linea, con particolare attenzione alle loro caratteristiche tipologiche, strutturali e decorative. L'analisi, condotta attraverso indagini dirette e documentazione d'archivio, evidenzia il diverso stato di conservazione degli edifici e la presenza di elementi architettonici distintivi. Sulla base di questo corpus di conoscenze, la ricerca propone una strategia di restauro volta a valorizzare la ferrovia come infrastruttura culturale e paesaggistica, attraverso la sua trasformazione in percorso ciclabile e pedonale (greenway) e la conversione delle stazioni in centri culturali e strutture per il turismo sostenibile. In sintesi, la ricerca sottolinea la necessità di un approccio unificato e tempestivo basato su una conoscenza approfondita e una conservazione integrata, riconoscendo la ferrovia come una preziosa opportunità di rigenerazione culturale e paesaggistica.
