This paper provides an overview of Opportunity Charging for public transport, comparing it with traditional Depot Charging. Driven by decarbonization, opportunity charging utilizes ultra-fast charging during short stops, extending operational range and maximizing vehicle availability. The paper details technical aspects, including inverted pantograph systems compliant with standards like SAE J3105 and ISO 15118, and the suitability of Lithium-ion batteries. While a regulatory framework exists, normative gaps persist, which new regulations are addressing. Economically, despite higher initial investment, opportunity charging presents lower operating costs due to reduced energy consumption and improved battery life. The presented cost-benefit analysis shows that opportunity charging offers a superior total cost of ownership in a long-term period for high-frequency, long urban routes, by enabling higher vehicle utilization. Environmentally, opportunity charging is more efficient due to less mass and energy use.
