The primary purpose of this paper is to pro-vide a structured and comprehensive guide for doctoral candidates focusing on engineering innovation and excellence. The work, developed in the framework of the PhD-EU Rail project, funded by EU Rail Joint Undertaking, is designed to support candidates in navigating the complexities of doctoral research. It aims to facilitate the understanding of the PhD process, including key requirements, potential outcomes, and distinctive nature of research-oriented doctoral pathways. Emphasis is placed on helping candidates strategically align their research with cutting-edge technologies, practices, synergies to develop essential research competencies, rigorous methodologies, comprehensive literature reviews, effective resource acquisition. Additionally, it is highlighted the importance of building net-works, engaging with stakeholders and fostering collaborative relationships to maximize impact and relevance of research to empower candidates with knowledge, skills, and connections useful for their studies and future careers.
