The interpretation of the first two strophes of horace, carm. 1, 20 has been almost unanimously shaped by the assumption among critics and commentators that theatrum (l. 3) must necessarily refer to the theatre of Pompey. This article examines the numerous interpretative inconsistencies arising from this view and explores an alternative reading.
L’interpretazione delle prime due strofe di Orazio, carm. 1, 20 è stata determinata, pressoché univocamente tra critici e commentatori, dall’idea che theatrum (v. 3) debba necessariamente riferirsi al teatro di Pompeo. Il presente contributo analizza i numerosi problemi interpretativi che derivano da questa interpretazione e propone una lettura alternativa.
