Donald Trump’s second term has introduced new uncertainties into the global order, challenging long-standing diplomatic balances and redefining the U.S. role. Nowhere is this more evident than in the deepening Washington–Beijing rivalry, which now extends beyond ideology to technology, security, and global influence. The Indo-Pacific has become a key arena, where U.S. efforts to reassert dominance clash with regional allies’ doubts about American reliability. China, observing these shifts through both official channels and academic discourse, seems poised to exploit the inconsistencies of U.S. foreign policy. Rather than responding with open hostility, Beijing appears to adopt a pragmatic stance—consolidating its regional and global standing while presenting itself as a stable actor amid Western unpredictability. Meanwhile, U.S. retreat from multilateral frameworks—particularly on climate and global governance—opens space for China to advance an alternative leadership model. In this fluid context, Beijing sees a chance to accelerate a transition toward a multipolar order more aligned with its ambitions.
