Abstract

The theme of reception is part of the broader context of population decrease in the South of Italy, in continuity with modalities and actions in progress in inner areas experimenting with tools and methods on the theme of inclusion. The evident demographic emorragy underway, as highlighted by recent ISTAT surveys, reveal the need for concrete and urgent policies aimed at the inclusion of migrants in order to reactivate new imaginaries, mitigate depopulation phenomena, and initiate a renewed demographic and economic growth based on the requalification and transformation of abandoned urban fabrics. In Sicily, the governance model recently elaborated in the framework of the COM.IN.4.0-Competenze per l’integrazione project shows the interest of local policies in stimulating the growth of the resident migrant population through projects for the recovery of the existing urban fabric and decent housing for migrant families. Starting from this governance model, the contribution presents the experience of the Summer School Workshop 2023 entitled ‘VALLEDOLMO PARADISE 2030: Living the Transition’ aimed at elaborating an international project on migrant housing. The outcomes of the project, developed in synergy with the Municipality of Valledolmo and the University of Palermo, will soon be reversed in the Three-Year Public Works Programme, supported by a political idea of an inclusive city to concretely experiment habitat projects with a patio typology that can stimulate the demographic rebirth in Sicilian inner areas.
