Through some little-known performative interventions by ORLAN and Gina Pane, carried out in Italy almost at the end of the initial season of Performance Art and in areas that were in some ways liminal with respect to the centers of the contemporary, the essay focuses on a phase of transition from the heroic centrality of the artist’s body to the use of ancillary figures, drawing and projections, up to the delegation to third parties. On the basis of unpublished photographic documents, systematized with what is already known about the two French artists, the study helps to better define the individual trajectories and undermines conventional narratives and accredited historiographical caesuras.
