The study on the abandoned village of Stazzano Vecchio led to the hypothesis of a territorial intervention strategy in which the preservation of the ruined site is intertwined with a sustainable recovery, culturally, socially and economically, of the territorial piece. The area under study includes not only the ruins of the ancient village, but also the small settlement of Stazzano Nuovo, which arose at the beginning of the 20th century following the seismic event that made the ancient settlement, which had already been in decline for years, uninhabitable and unrecoverable. The relocated reconstruction of the new site, which lasted for about fifty years, generated a centre lacking in quality and services; critical issues that led to the loss of some of the settlement’s inhabitants and vitality. The proposed hypothesis focuses on the integration of the original centre with the current one thanks to the protected natural system that characterises the area, with the aim of revitalising the territorial context made up of the existing settlements, the natural habitat in an attractive landscape context. A strategy that aims to create a system capable of attracting tourist interest and attracting private investors and public funding, within the framework of policies for the regeneration of areas in socio-cultural and productive decline, generating beneficial effects on the population, the conservation of the ancient site and the ecosystem.
