Since 2001, the University of Siena’s Meta3Lab has conducted archaeological research in the Byzantine District of Gortyn in Crete (GQB), supported by the Italian Archaeological School at Athens and the Ephorate of Heraklion. The GQB project applies sustainable technologies to archaeological research, focusing on Free and Open-Source Software and Open Formats to reduce excavation recording time and costs and improve accessibility for the excavation team. During these years the team has adopted new IT workflows and tools for faster post-excavation data acquisition, employing a 3D survey workflow that includes 2D metric photography and 3D modelling using UAVs. A Wiki platform has been created for excavation recording since 2006, encompassing raw data, notes, and interpretations. Complementing this, a FOSS GIS platform manages and relates data from the Wiki with 2D drawings, aiding in data digitization, querying, and visualization. Pottery processing has been recently enhanced using a Laser Aided Profiler for quicker drawing, digitization, and archiving. New systems for visualizing archaeological data are being experimented with, including the GIS platform that combines diverse datasets for detailed maps of domestic spaces in GQB. Various 3D rendering and reconstruction methods, such as the Extended Matrix procedure, have been tested, leading to the development of an ArchaeoBIM. This paper aims to discuss which information these methodologies provide us and their level of precision, cost-effectiveness, and their ability to provide new insights into the site.
