Cataloghi letterari e definizione del canone volgare nella Francia medievale = Literary catalogues and definition of the vernacular canon in medieval France

This study investigates the gradual and implicit codification of the vernacular literary canon in France between the 12th and 14th centuries from a diachronic perspective. The research employed the comparative analysis of literary catalogues included in the following texts: Estoire de la guerre sainte, Roman de Renart, Chanson de Guillaume, Sacristine, Deus bordeors ribauz, Richard le Beau, Roman du Comte d’Anjou, Wistasse le Moine. For these lists to be effective the texts cited had to been sufficiently well-known to be recognized by the public. Given the literary nature of these catalogues, the results were compared with the textual tradition of each work to verify the results from a documentary point of view. The study revealed the presence of a canon that expands in accordance with the developments of vernacular literature itself and becomes increasingly structured over time. This process highlights a growing awareness of what is now referred to as the “literary genre system”

Questo contributo intende indagare la graduale ed implicita codifica del canone letterario volgare nella Francia tra il XII e il XIV secolo secondo una prospettiva diacronica. Lo studio è stato condotto attraverso l’analisi comparata dei cataloghi letterari inseriti all’interno delle seguenti opere: Estoire de la guerre sainte, Roman de Renart, Chanson de Guillaume, Sacristine, Deus bordeors ribauz, Richard le Beau, Roman du Comte d’Anjou, Wistasse le Moine. Per rendere efficace l’uso di tali liste i componimenti citati devono essere sufficientemente famosi da poter essere riconosciuti dal pubblico. Vista la natura letteraria dei cataloghi, si sono ricostruite le linee fondamentali della tradizione testuale delle singole opere in modo da verificare da un punto di vista documentario i risultati raggiunti. Lo studio ha fatto emergere la presenza di un canone che si espande, seguendo gli sviluppi della letteratura volgare stessa, e si struttura nel corso del tempo, mettendo in evidenza una crescente consapevolezza di quello che modernamente è definito “sistema dei generi”.
