This paper presents a PhD research project that explores the digital classification and valorisation through the Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle legacy held at the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Venice. The project aims to test automated methods for analytical indexing and image recognition, using Cavalcaselle’s materials as a case study. By employing digital tools and methodologies, including AI-driven analysis of handwritten documents and image recognition, the research aims to create an interactive digital archive that facilitates new forms of scholarly inquiry. The ultimate goal is to provide a replicable model for other cultural heritage collections that include textual and visual materials (as often happens in the legacies of art historians and connoisseurs) making them more accessible to researchers and the public alike.

Abstract
This paper presents a PhD research project that explores the digital classification and valorisation through the Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle legacy held at the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Venice. The project aims to test automated methods for analytical indexing and image recognition, using Cavalcaselle’s materials as a case study. By employing digital tools and methodologies, including AI-driven analysis of handwritten documents and image recognition, the research aims to create an interactive digital archive that facilitates new forms of scholarly inquiry. The ultimate goal is to provide a replicable model for other cultural heritage collections that include textual and visual materials (as often happens in the legacies of art historians and connoisseurs) making them more accessible to researchers and the public alike.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
