This article looks at the work of the artists sent to Rome on study grants in the first half of the nineteenth century, centring on the Valencia engraver José Alcaide and the output of Ponciano Ponzano, investigating their collaborations and interactions with each other and other subsidised artists abroad. The contributions of these artists are traced through Alcaide’s graphic work kept in Rome’s Istituto Centrale per la Grafica, which gives priceless insights into the cultural and artistic influence of Spanish artists abroad in this particular historical period.
