The evolution of the political and administrative organization of Dalmatia, shortly before and after the downfall of the Western Roman Empire, is affected by all the consequences of its condition of disputed ‘limes’. Although Dalmatia was de facto invluded into the pars Occidentis after the death of emperor Theodosius (who had been appointed Emperor of the Eastern part of the Empire by Gratian in 379), forty years later, with the death of emperor Honorius, this region started to be included in Constantinople’s political domain: Salona was an essential strategic point to communicate with Ravenna and to control Noricum, and even for the struggle against the Vandals. Constantinople’s conquest by Odoacer in 480, with all its mysterious sides, can be considered as a root cause of the Gothic War. In the short term it determined the fall of the regime of the King of Herules himself, and immediately after, it determined the period of peace and prosperity Italy experienced thanks to king Theoderic, whom Cassiodorus widely celebrated in his ’Variae’.

Abstract
In the short term it determined the fall of the regime of the King of Herules himself, and immediately after, it determined the period of peace and prosperity Italy experienced thanks to king Theoderic, whom Cassiodorus widely celebrated in his ’Variae’.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
