In this paper, it will be argued that the words ὄλπις (cf. Sapph. Fr. 141 V.) and ἔρπις (cf. Hippon. Fr. 79 Degani), both being Greek renderings of the Egyptian word irp (“wine”), reflect, respectively, an old pre-Fayyūmic (cf. Hlp) and a pre-Boḥairic (cf. Hrp) pronunciation of irp. This discrepancy reveals a paradigm shift in Graeco-Egyptian trade during the Archaic Period: from the mid-7th to the mid-6th century BCE, Graeco-Egyptian trade took place to the South of Memphis, whereas, in the 6th century BCE, it was restricted to Naukratis.
