With the establishment of Christianity in the 4th century and the rapid development of monasticism in the Holy Land, monasteries became significant spiritual and artistic centers. Among their most remarkable legacies are the floor mosaics, which adorned both churches and the private spaces of monks. These mosaics reflect not only the technical mastery of the time but also fundamental aspects of monastic life, faith, and the region’s multiculturalism. Focusing on the monasteries of Palestine and the urban areas of Jerusalem, the study examines the variety of decorative motifs, ranging from complex geometric patterns to lively veg- etal scrolls populated by animal and anthropomorphic figures. These decorations not only beautified the spaces but also conveyed religious and symbolic meanings, emphasizing the connection between agricultural activities and faith. The inscriptions found in the mosaics provide valuable insights into the monks and their patrons, contributing to a deeper understanding of late antique society. The decline of monasticism after the Arab conquest in the 7th century did not mark the disappearance of mosaic art, which survived by adapting to political and cultural changes. The multicultural coexistence typical of the region is evident in the mosaics, showcasing the interplay of diverse artistic traditions and their evolution over the centuries. Through an analysis of these mosaics, the study offers a glimpse into the daily life, beliefs, and intercultural interactions of the late antique Levant, demonstrating how mosaic art serves as a valuable window into the past.
