This review examines a collected volume derived from the workshop “Saussure–Chomsky: Converging and Diverging” (Geneva, 2017), which explores the theoretical and methodological relations between Saussurean structuralism and Chomskyan generativism. The contributions reveal both convergences, such as shared concerns with linguistic universality and formal structure, and deep epistemological divergences regarding the nature, origin, and cognition of language. Rather than seeking resolution, the collection highlights the complexity and interpretive richness of comparing two foundational models in modern linguistics.

Abstract
This review examines a collected volume derived from the workshop “Saussure–Chomsky: Converging and Diverging” (Geneva, 2017), which explores the theoretical and methodological relations between Saussurean structuralism and Chomskyan generativism. The contributions reveal both convergences, such as shared concerns with linguistic universality and formal structure, and deep epistemological divergences regarding the nature, origin, and cognition of language. Rather than seeking resolution, the collection highlights the complexity and interpretive richness of comparing two foundational models in modern linguistics.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
