In the early 1960s, at the peak of his international reputation following the Rome Olympics, Pier Luigi Nervi was commissioned by Dartmouth College to design an athletic field house in Hanover, New Hampshire. Inspired by his signature “Nervi style,” the structure featured a vast vaulted roof composed of reinforced concrete precast elements (tavelloni), adapted from a preliminary design by Eggers & Higgins. Due to material constraints in the U.S., Nervi replaced ferrocement with reinforced concrete and proportioned the elements according to local crane capacities. Developed in close collaboration with Campbell & Aldrich and engineer John Minnich, the project was finalised in 1961 and completed the following year. Despite initial challenges in the precasting process, the Leverone Field House became a landmark of Nervi’s transatlantic influence, followed a decade later by his final American work, the adjacent hockey rink.
