Abstract
Insularity represents a condition that can be associated with island territories but also with internal ones, both of which often share a situation of “isolation”, compared to overseas lands or more central and polarizing ones. However, there are territorial contexts in which this dual condition is jointly present, such as Sicily in which it is possible to describe the presence of several “islands” that express his multiple identity, different in its spatio-physical characters, historical-cultural and economic-social ones. In 1972 Carlo Doglio and Leonardo Urbani describe the territorial imbalances of Sicily – due to a political-managerial situation that has always favored the coastal areas – through the existence of two Sicilies: the Island with inland lake, consisting of the continuity of the coastal belts of different thickness, and the absolute Island, inside the first and “isolated”. There are, however, cases in which the existence of “internal islands” does not presuppose a condition of marginality but becomes a positive presence, sometimes latent but still active and operating. Starting from the number three that recurs several times in the historical, symbolic, geographical and geometric aspects of Sicily it is possible to identify as many real and specific points, that connected generate an ideal triangle at the vertices of which there are the Doric temples of Victory, of Jupiter and of Athena, erected in 480 B.C. in the ancient Himera, Akragas and Syrakousai on the occasion of the victory of the Greeks in the battle against the Carthaginians. This that which could therefore be considered an island, or even a Vallo, is charged with memories and meanings referring to a precise historical condition that becomes spiritual, in which the Greek characters linked to myth turn into the pretext for a reinterpretation of contemporary territory and the re-establishment of a cultural identity, always connected to the nature of forms and to the events of history.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
