Comporre il territorio. Il progetto di architettura per la grande scala

The theme of the research is the study of architectural composition operations in territorial-scale design. In an era of profound changes, reflecting on the potential of project as a tool capable of effecting transformations on the present-day reality emerges as a central issue. Today, the territory presents itself as a complex system – dense with elements, history and contradictions – partly amorphous and fractured. This condition reveals the meaning, commitment, and responsibility of our discipline in seeking a possible interpretative key to the progressive de-signification of places and the disappearance of spatial values. Like a building or a city, the territory itself is also an object of construction. It represents the product of a continuous accumulative process made up of rewriting, stratification and modifications that have shaped its current form. "building the territory” therefore means to transform it, to engage within that millenary evolutionary act by recognizing in the territory a concrete spatiality, possessing the same characteristics as an architectural form. At the territorial and geographical scale, the term "construction" thus refers to a process of spatial reinterpretation and recomposition that includes the existing and its related activities, seeking an aesthetic elaboration together with a semantic attribution. Reflecting on the process of “constructing of the form,” which has no dimensions but rather rules and principles, therefore means questioning on the specificities of design and the method of Composition as the only approach to all scales of the artifact. Through the identification of certain formal operations, the research aims to analyze how, through the architectural project, it is possible to construct renewed spatial structures, intervening on the form of the territory by redefining the relationships among its constituent elements, with the purpose of restoring meaning and order to the whole.

Tema della ricerca è lo studio delle operazioni di Composizione architettonica nel progetto a scala territoriale. In un’epoca di grandi mutazioni, riflettere sulle capacità del progetto quale strumento in grado di operare trasformazioni sulla realtà odierna appare uno dei punti centrali. Il territorio si presenta oggi come un sistema complesso, denso di elementi, storia e contraddizioni, in parte amorfo, in parte estromesso e fratturato; una condizione che rivela il senso, l’impegno e il dovere della nostra disciplina nella ricerca di una possibile chiave interpretativa alla progressiva de-significazione dei luoghi e scomparsa dei valori spaziali. Come un edificio o una città, anche il territorio è oggetto di costruzione. Esso rappresenta il prodotto di un continuo processo accumulativo fatto di riscritture, stratificazione e modificazioni che ne hanno determinato la forma attuale. “Costruire il territorio” significa quindi trasformarlo, inserirsi all’interno di quel millenario atto evolutivo riconoscendo al territorio stesso una spazialità concreta, che possiede le medesime caratteristiche di una forma architettonica. Alla dimensione territoriale e geografica il termine “costruzione” indica così un processo di re-interpretazione e di ri-composizione di tipo spaziale che comprende l’esistente e le attività ad esso connesse, tentandone un’elaborazione estetica congiuntamente ad un’attribuzione semantica. Ragionare sul processo di “costruzione della forma”, che non ha dimensioni ma regole e principi, significa quindi interrogarsi sulle specificità del progetto e sul metodo della Composizione quale unico approccio a tutte le scale del manufatto. Attraverso l’individuazione di alcune operazioni formali la ricerca intende pertanto analizzare i modi in cui, per mezzo del progetto di architettura, è possibile costruire rinnovate strutture spaziali, intervenendo sulla forma del territorio mediante la ridefinizione delle relazioni tra gli elementi che lo compongono al fine di ridare senso e ordine all’insieme.
