The main focus of essay is the conservation and compatible use continuous of some State buildings in Rome, which are among the greatest examples of post-unification Italian architecture and of Rome, new capital city of the united country. Currently these buildings are still in use with the same administrative functions for which they were built, but they must respond to the renewed needs of contemporary reality. After more than one hundred and fifty years from their construction, the need to intervene to preserve them emerges. It is important to achieve a thorough knowledge of the materials which them composed and construction technique, to intervene on them with conservation projects. The buildings at the center of this essay are the Ministero delle Finanze (1871-1879) designed by Raffaele Canevari and the Palazzo di Giustizia (1889 -1911) designed by Guglielmo Calderini. Looking to the future, any type of conservative intervention on the Ministero delle Finanze and the Palazzo di Giustizia must be conceived in a way compatible with the continuous and intensive use to which the structures are exposed. It is a mandatory act in balance between traditional and new technology.
