This paper focuses on the controversial topic of cenotaphs in the pre-Roman period, a subject that has been relatively under-studied compared to what has been done about the whole Greek and Roman worlds. In various necropolises of the Tyrrhenian and central Adriatic areas, scholars have identied symbolic graves, without human remains, presumably erected in honor of prominent individuals and warriors who have been killed in action or dead in distant lands, to perpetuate their memory within their home communities.
