This paper examines the correspondence between documentary terminology and the morphological features of medieval paths in northern Lazio (11th–15th centuries). By analyzing notarial records from Corneto, Cencelle, Tolfa Nuova, and Monte Monastero, integrated with archaeological and GIS data, the study investigates the recurrence of terms such as "via publica", "strata", "viculus", and "stradellum". The analysis shows that these designations reflect not only the juridical status of the routes but, in some cases, also constructional aspects, such as the presence of paved or cobbled surfaces. The comparative approach between written sources and material evidence offers new interpretative tools for the classification and dating of medieval road systems, contributing to a better understanding of both continuity and innovation in relation to the Roman network.

Abstract
This paper examines the correspondence between documentary terminology and the morphological features of medieval paths in northern Lazio (11th–15th centuries). By analyzing notarial records from Corneto, Cencelle, Tolfa Nuova, and Monte Monastero, integrated with archaeological and GIS data, the study investigates the recurrence of terms such as "via publica", "strata", "viculus", and "stradellum". The analysis shows that these designations reflect not only the juridical status of the routes but, in some cases, also constructional aspects, such as the presence of paved or cobbled surfaces. The comparative approach between written sources and material evidence offers new interpretative tools for the classification and dating of medieval road systems, contributing to a better understanding of both continuity and innovation in relation to the Roman network.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
