Sotto dettatura. Lo spazio vuoto tra le parole e le immagini

Within the broader relationship between textual and visual codes, which, as some exemplary cases demonstrate, has been a fertile field of creative exploration for architects and artists throughout history, a series of stimulating experiments in the figurative arts during the twentieth century explored the interplay between verbal language and visual imagery. Beginning with the instructions for the creation of some small artefacts dictated by Moholy-Nagy, other artists such as Sol Lewitt have drawn up verbal instructions to guide draftsmen in the creation of graphic works. In reflecting on how this line of research has been fueled by the figurative inventions of René Magritte, Joseph Kosuth and Imre Bak and how these attempts have found a subtle synthesis in the work of Lawrence Weiner, the paper highlights how the empty space between image and word represents a place of creative tension, fertile and in continuous evolution, which does not appear to be fillable even with the recent recourse to the use of artificial intelligence. The interpretative space generated between these two languages stimulates imagination, dialogue, and reinterpretation, underscoring how this inherent dichotomy continues to be an enduring subject of inquiry.

All’interno della più generale relazione tra i codici testuali e visivi che, come mostrano alcuni casi esemplari, nel corso della storia ha costituito un ambito di applicazione per la creatività di architetti e artisti, nel corso del Novecento una serie di stimolanti esperimenti condotti nelle arti figurative ha esplorato la relazione che intercorre tra il linguaggio verbale e quello delle immagini. A partire dalle istruzioni per la realizzazione di alcuni piccoli manufatti dettate da Moholy-Nagy, altri artisti come Sol Lewitt hanno redatto istruzioni verbali per guidare dei disegnatori alla realizzazione di opere grafiche. Nel riflettere su come questo filone di ricerca sia stato alimentato dalle invenzioni figurative di René Magritte, Joseph Kosuth e Imre Bak e come questi tentativi abbiano trovato una sintesi sottile nell’opera di Lawrence Weiner, nel testo si evidenzia come lo spazio vuoto tra immagine e parola rappresenti un luogo di tensione creativa, fertile e in continua evoluzione, che non appare colmabile neanche con il ricorso recente all’uso degli algoritmi di intelligenza artificiale. Lo scarto interpretativo che si genera tra i due linguaggi stimola immaginazione, dialogo e reinterpretazioni, evidenziando come questa intrinseca dicotomia rimanga una fonte inesauribile di ricerca.
