In the late 1970s, Alberto Burri settled in his hometown of Città di Castello, obtaining from the FACT the free use of one of the large tobacco drying sheds built between 1958 and 1965. Here, the artist created a series of monumental cycles, conceived in conceptual relation to the great masters he referenced – above all, Piero della France-sca – and to the silent yet assertive presence of the industrial context. Carefully stud-ied and documented by both key figures and scholars, this paper aims to reflect, within the pages of «Patrimonio Industriale», on the conditions of both necessity and op-portunity that inform specific interventions on industrial buildings. The intention is to highlight the key elements of an interpretative approach that consciously reimagines these structures for contemporary use, entrusting color, surface, and material with the role of representing the ultimate culmination of the industrial age and of positioning art as a means to reflect on a broader historical legacy.
