Èkphrasis urbana e sguardo poetico. La Roma ‘antigoethiana di Rafael Alberti/ Urban Èkphrasis and the Poetic Gaze:Rafael Alberti’s ‘Anti-Goethian’ Rome

The work Rafael Alberti (1902-1999), Andalusian visual artist, and poet, moves within a realm where the visual, the verbal, and recital intertwine without clear boundaries –creating a synthesis of artistic expressions that seems to fully embody the aspirations of the avant-garde twentieth century.The research presented here in its initial stages aims to reconstruct the image Alberti offers us of the city of Rome, where he spent 14 of the 40 years he lived in exile. The city that emerges from his words is one both loved and feared, where life appears so layered that it sometimes seems to reject the caminante –the wayfarer– someone who, not quite a tourist, walks its streets.The project proposes an itinerary via the poems in the collection Roma, peligro para caminantes[Alberti 2000]. The stops along the way are marked by the places described, presented through a synthesis of photographic images and video fragments that visually support the recitation of the poem in Italian and the transcription in the original Spanish.A path, therefore, that seeks to reconstruct the “lyrico-graphic” synthesis so dear to the poet, in the belief that, as Loretta Frattale writes, Alberti’s work is “memorable and widely celebrated literary poetry” and, at the same time, “radiant and deeply personal painted poetry.”

L’opera di Rafael Alberti (1902-1999), artista visivo e poeta andaluso, si muove su un terreno dove visuale, verbale e recitazione non trovano una decisa demarcazione, in una sintesi delle espressioni artistiche che sembra interpretare pienamente le aspirazioni del Novecento d’avanguardia. La ricerca, che qui si presenta nelle sue fasi di avvio, mira a ricomporre l’immagine che Alberti ci offe della città di Roma, luogo nel quale ha trascorso 14 dei 40 anni vissuti come esule. La città che emerge dalle sue parole è una città amata e temuta, nella quale la vita appare a tal punto stratificata da arrivare a volte a respingere il caminante, il viandante, colui che, non essendo propriamente un turista, ne frequenta le strade. Il pro-getto propone un itinerario attraverso le poesie della raccolta Roma, peligro para caminantes [Roma, pericolo per i viandanti, Alberti 2000]; le tappe del percorso sono rappresentate dai luoghi descritti, presentati in una sintesi attuata attraverso immagini fotografiche e frammenti di video che supportano visivamente la recitazione del testo poetico in italiano e la lettura dello stesso nella lingua di origine, lo spagnolo. Un percorso, quindi, che intende ricostruire la sintesi “liricografica” così cara al poeta, nella convinzione che, come scrive Loretta Frattale, quella di Alberti sia “memorabile e policelebrata poesia letteraria” e, al contempo, “smagliante e molto personale poesia dipinta”.
