Kushi Fusako’s novel, Memoirs of a Declining Ryukyuan woman, intimately explores the intricate web of identity issues in the Ryūkyū Islands, focusing on the profound inferiority complex experienced by inland dwellers. This article delves into Kushi’s narrative, analysing the characters’ struggles with cultural identity and highlighting the tension between traditional Okinawan values and the pervasive influence of Japanese culture. Through an analysis of traditional songs, it examines how these themes connect to broader issues of self-perception and sense of belonging. In doing so, this study provides a compelling examination of the collision between local heritage and external influences, offering valuable insights into the ongoing struggle for cultural preservation and adaptation in the Ryūkyū Islands.

Abstract
Kushi Fusako’s novel, Memoirs of a Declining Ryukyuan woman, intimately explores the intricate web of identity issues in the Ryūkyū Islands, focusing on the profound inferiority complex experienced by inland dwellers. This article delves into Kushi’s narrative, analysing the characters’ struggles with cultural identity and highlighting the tension between traditional Okinawan values and the pervasive influence of Japanese culture. Through an analysis of traditional songs, it examines how these themes connect to broader issues of self-perception and sense of belonging. In doing so, this study provides a compelling examination of the collision between local heritage and external influences, offering valuable insights into the ongoing struggle for cultural preservation and adaptation in the Ryūkyū Islands.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
