The article deals with the digitisation of the collection of fortification models made by Luigi Ferdinando Marsili (1658-1720). It is not known exactly why the soldier and scientist Marsili made the models, nor the exact date of construction of these models, but what is certain is that he drew inspiration for their construction from the models in Leonhard Christoph Sturm’s book ‘Architectura Militaris Hypothetico-Eclectica, Oder Gründliche Anleitung zu der Kriegs-Baukuns’. The 39 models, reproducing military treatise tables from Galeazzo Alghisi da Carpi to Leonhard Christoph Sturms, are now on display in the military architecture room of the Palazzo Poggi Museum in Bologna. The aim of the research is to catalogue and enhance the collection of these maquettes through the creation of digital models. The research work was carried out using laser scanning and photo modelling techniques to achieve an interactive three-dimensional exploration of the models and provide more scientific information and disseminate this priceless cultural heritage.
