Domiziano e la correctio morum. I modelli giulio-claudii

This paper aims to shed light on the condemnation and denial of luxuria and, more generally, on the moral reform (correctio morum) assumed by the last of the Flavians. The objective of the paper is twofold: on the one hand, to determine the extent to which Domitian follows in the wake of the policy inaugurated by his father; on the other hand, to fathom the Suetonian Life, to reflect on the judgment underlying the program of correctio morum advocated by Domitian, to which Suetonius attributes many vices, except luxuria. The correctio morum will be analysed as a key to understanding the several implicit models in the representation of Domitian, the explicit ones, and those attributed to him by Suetonius.

Questo contributo intende approfondire la condanna e il diniego della luxuria alla luce della correctio morum, intrapresa da Domiziano. L’obiettivo è duplice: da un lato, determinare fino a che punto Domiziano segua la politica di riforma morale inaugurata dal padre Vespasiano; dall’altro, analizzare la Vita che Svetonio dedica a Domiziano per determinare il giudizio politico del biografo che attribuisce a Domiziano svariati vitia, ma non luxuria. La correctio morum sarà analizzata come uno strumento per sviscerare i numerosi modelli sottesi alla rappresentazione che Svetonio offre di Domiziano.
