At the conclusion of the so‑called “battle of oracles” between Paphlagon and the Sausage‑Seller in Knights (Aristoph. Eq. 1036‑1050), Aristophanes makes an explicit reference to the oracle of the wooden wall, as presented in Herodotus’ Histories. Analysing the relationship between Aristophanes, Herodotus, and other sources linked to the memory of the Battle of Salamis allows us, due to the unique value of comedy as a historical source, to offer new insights into the tradition of oracles and the evolution of the “oracular tale” from the historical event to its recounting in Herodotus’ Histories.

Abstract
At the conclusion of the so‑called “battle of oracles” between Paphlagon and the Sausage‑Seller in Knights (Aristoph. Eq. 1036‑1050), Aristophanes makes an explicit reference to the oracle of the wooden wall, as presented in Herodotus’ Histories. Analysing the relationship between Aristophanes, Herodotus, and other sources linked to the memory of the Battle of Salamis allows us, due to the unique value of comedy as a historical source, to offer new insights into the tradition of oracles and the evolution of the “oracular tale” from the historical event to its recounting in Herodotus’ Histories.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
