The paper aims to elucidate fundamental aspects of Fabrizio Clerici’s life and the inception of his career, positioning him within what can be defined as an “Italian fantastic current.” The documents retained in his archive, a considerable portion of which remains unpublished, have enabled the reconstruction of events pertaining to Clerici and the artists linked to him. Owing to the difficulties encountered by Italian critics regarding the Surrealism, these individuals were omitted from the history of art in Italy due to their affiliations with the French movement. Leonor Fini, Stanislao Lepri, Eugene Berman, and Pavel Tchelitchew constitute notable figures that merit inclusion in this context. Central to this research was the considerable correspondence with the artistic and intellectual milieu both in Italy and internationally, numerous photographs serving as direct testimony to the events experienced, and a comprehensive library consisting of rare catalogues and first editions.
Il contributo, ripercorrendo alcune tappe della biografia di Fabrizio Clerici intende concentrarsi sull’avvio della sua carriera, al fine di collocarlo all’interno di quella che può essere definita una ‘corrente fantastica italiana’. I documenti conservati nel suo archivio, gran parte dei quali rimasti inediti, hanno consentito di ricostruire queste vicende, relative non solo a Clerici ma anche ad alcuni artisti a lui legati. A causa delle difficoltà incontrate dalla critica italiana nei confronti del Surrealismo, questi personaggi furono omessi dalla storia dell’arte in Italia perché associati al movimento francese. Leonor Fini, Stanislao Lepri, Eugene Berman e Pavel Tchelitchew, sono tra gli artisti inclusi in questo contesto. Fondamentale ai fini della ricerca è stata la nutrita corrispondenza di Clerici con l’ambiente artistico e intellettuale italiano e internazionale, numerose fotografie a testimonianza diretta degli avvenimenti vissuti e un’articolata biblioteca composta da rari cataloghi e prime edizioni.
