«Pel vantaggio della Republica letteraria». Il carteggio bibliografico tra Girolamo Tiraboschi e Carlo Carlini

The essay focuses on the correspondence exchanged, from 1781 to 1788, between Girolamo Tiraboschi, librarian of the Duke of Modena, and Carlo Carlini, the first custodian of the Royal Library of Brera. The 51 preserved missives constitute a piece, still virtually unpublished, of the dense information network that connected the farthest outposts of the Respublica litteraria to Tiraboschi’s desk. What emerges from the correspondence is a relationship that was far from being purely and strictly work-related, having quickly become friendly: in the letters, indeed, one finds both erudite information, book exchange agreements, requests for bibliographic checks, and numerous notes relating to the more private sphere. The epistolary thus provides a vivid insight into the professional and intellectual activities of the two correspondents, as well as a more three-dimensional reconstruction of their personalities.

Il contributo ripercorre la corrispondenza epistolare, intercorsa tra il 1781 e il 1788, tra Girolamo Tiraboschi, bibliotecario del duca di Modena, e Carlo Carlini, primo custode della Regia Biblioteca di Brera. Le 51 missive conservate costituiscono un tassello, ancora pressoché inedito, di quella fittissima rete informativa che collegava i più lontani avamposti della Respublica litteraria con la scrivania di Tiraboschi. Emerge dal carteggio un rapporto che fu ben lungi dall’essere unicamente e strettamente lavorativo, avendo assunto ben presto toni marcatamente amicali: nelle lettere si ritrovano, difatti, sia diverse segnalazioni erudite, accordi per lo scambio di volumi, richieste di verifiche bibliografiche, sia numerose note relative alla sfera più privata. L’epistolario restituisce, così, un vivido spaccato dell’attività professionale e intellettuale dei due corrispondenti, come una più plastica ricostruzione della loro personalità.
