This article examines the rewriting of historical events and leading figures of the Ottonian dynasty in the medieval German poetry, from the short poems Modus Ottinc and De Heinrico to the late epos of Herzog Ernst. The epic blends together the quarrel between Herzog Liudolf and his father Otto I in 953-954 and the revolts of Herzog Ernst II from Swabia against his stepfather King Konrad II in 1026-1027. The epos, which became very popular with the descriptions of the mirabilia Orientis, conveys also a political ideal rooted in a sense of unity of the Empire and harmony between its princes.

Abstract
This article examines the rewriting of historical events and leading figures of the Ottonian dynasty in the medieval German poetry, from the short poems Modus Ottinc and De Heinrico to the late epos of Herzog Ernst. The epic blends together the quarrel between Herzog Liudolf and his father Otto I in 953-954 and the revolts of Herzog Ernst II from Swabia against his stepfather King Konrad II in 1026-1027. The epos, which became very popular with the descriptions of the mirabilia Orientis, conveys also a political ideal rooted in a sense of unity of the Empire and harmony between its princes.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
