TRA USI STORICI E TRASFORMAZIONI URBANE: CASTEL NUOVO IN NAPOLI E LA PERDUTA CITTADELLA FORTIFICATA TRA XVIII E XX SECOLO

The paper aims to examine some phases of the history of Castel Nuovo in Naples, with a particular focus on the evolution of its historical uses. This examination encompasses not only the Aragonese core building but also the fortified citadel that once surrounded it. To study more distant periods, this research relies on the analysis and re-elaboration of historical plans, including their previously neglected legends, and on direct comparisons with the building itself. The most recent history of the Castle – a royal palace later transformed into barracks, that in the meantime assumed the symbolic role of National Monument – is traced by highlighting how much temporary and permanent uses have influenced the architecture, even with ephemeral structures, and the restorations carried out in the last century.
