The dominant cultural paradigm of Patristic times relied heavily on the Platonic imagery which identifies the feminine gender with weakness and instability. As such, a feminine language was mostly considered unsuitable to Trinitarian discourses. Yet, some Christian authors did not entirely conform to the dominant paradigms and employed the feminine as an intellectual category, that is, as a means of representing theological ideas. In this paper I present the case of Origen of Alexandria, who incorporates the feminine in his interpretation of Sophia (Wisdom).

Abstract
The dominant cultural paradigm of Patristic times relied heavily on the Platonic imagery which identifies the feminine gender with weakness and instability. As such, a feminine language was mostly considered unsuitable to Trinitarian discourses. Yet, some Christian authors did not entirely conform to the dominant paradigms and employed the feminine as an intellectual category, that is, as a means of representing theological ideas. In this paper I present the case of Origen of Alexandria, who incorporates the feminine in his interpretation of Sophia (Wisdom).| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
