Sopravvivenza e reinterpretazione della memoria dell'antico sull'Esquilino. La percezione delle rovine nella città in trasformazione

The contribution intends to propose a long-term reading of the history of the ancient monuments of the Esquiline Hill, investigating their perception and memory in relation to the urban landscape that has been progressively transformed: from oblivion during the Middle Ages, to theirrediscovery in the Renaissance, passing through the complex period of the Unification of Italy, up to the contemporary city. In this heterogeneous and dense urban space, the role, function, and significance of ancient monuments have undoubtedly influenced, with very different outcomes depending on the times, the urban landscape of the neighborhood, according to a difficult dialectical relationship that is still not fully resolved.
