Freud e l'Ordine dei B'nai B'rith: un'appartenenza lunga quarant'anni

On the evening of September 23, 1897, Freud was initiated into the “Wien” Lodge of the Independent Order of B’nai B’rith (originally Bundes Brüder or “The Brothers of the Covenant”), immediately after his father‘s death, at a time anti-Semitism was spreading across the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Young Freud made his debut before the B’nai B’rith brothers on December 7, 1897, with a lecture on dreams which was enthu-siastically received and which anticipated by two years the release of his famous Traumdeu-tung. It is upon this basis that the article aims to analyse the reasons that led the father of psychoanalysis to be initiated into the B’nai B’rith and remain linked to them all his life. At the same time, through rigorous research into the sources and rituals of the Order, con-ducted in the national archives of the B’nai B’rith preserved in Ohio, the Order’s history will be reconstructed starting f rom 1843 when the first lodge was built in New York. It was only open to Jews but followed rituals, an initiatory path and values similar to those used in Freemasonry. It also had the declared aim of combating anti-Semitism and promoting educational and philanthropic activity to encourage Jewish immigrants of different ori-gins and traditions to integrate into American society. Lastly, the article highlights some of the aspects of Freud’s experience in B’nai B’rith that may have been sources in his con-struction of psychoanalysis.

La sera del 23 settembre 1897 Sigmund Freud fu iniziato in una loggia viennese dell’Indipendent Order of B’nai B’rith (originariamente Bundes Brüder ovvero ‘I Fratelli dell’Alleanza’), subito dopo la scomparsa di suo padre e in un momento in cui l’antisemitismo si stava diffondendo nell’impero austro-ungarico. Il giovane Freud esordì di f ronte ai f ratelli dei B’nai B’rith, il 7 dicembre 1897, con una conferenza sui sogni che fu accolta con entusiasmo e che anticipò di due anni l’uscita della sua famosa Traumdeu-tung. Lungo questa direzione, l’articolo si propone di analizzare le ragioni che spinsero il padre della psicoanalisi ad essere iniziato ai B’nai B’rith e a rimanervi legato tutta la vita. Allo stesso tempo, attraverso una rigorosa ricerca sulle fonti e i rituali dell’Ordine, condotta negli archivi nazionali dei B’nai B’rith conservati in Ohio, sarà ricostruita la sua storia che risale al 1843, anno in cui a New York sorse la prima loggia riservata ai soli ebrei, ma con rituali, percorso iniziatico e valori simili a quelli usati nella Libera Mura-toria e con l’obiettivo dichiarato di combattere l’antisemitismo e promuovere un’attività educativa e filantropica per favorire gli immigrati ebrei di origini e tradizioni diverse a in-tegrarsi nella società americana. L’articolo, infine, evidenzia alcuni aspetti dell’esperienza di Freud nell’Ordine dei B’nai B’rithche possono essere stati fonti nella costruzione della psicoanalisi.
