Extended reality and movie theater experiences. The sound liveliness problem

Cinema provides a unique atmosphere, blending engagement with Brechtian distancing. However, XR streaming transforms the vibrancy of the theater experience. While much research has focused on theater and music in XR, the potential of films in this context is less explored. This paper focuses on sound and music in adapting films for XR. After reviewing the literature, we examine stereo sound spatialization through a case study using a virtual orchestra in a Digital Audio Workstation. Time- frequency analysis shows that XR devices with stereo speakers enhance spatialized sound and reduce background noise. XR offers high liveness for digital cinema, which will be assessed in future quality of experience studies.
