Archaeological research conducted in Eastern Arabia over the past decades has provided valuable insights into the social and cultural significance of certain animal species in prehistoric communities. This study examines 26 double-perforated shark teeth from five archaeological sites along Oman’s coast, dating from the mid-6th to the late 3rd millennium BCE. These artefacts, ranging from Neolithic shell middens to Early Bronze Age settlements, suggest a consistent tradition of modification and utilization. Morphological and use-wear analyses were complemented by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) on identified residues. An experimental pilot study tested the hypothesis that these double-perforated teeth functioned as arrowheads. Although direct evidence of bow and arrow use in Oman’s prehistory is absent, the high frequency of lithic projectile points in Neolithic contexts, combined with experimental findings, provides preliminary support for this functional interpretation.
Le ricerche archeologiche condotte in Arabia sudorientale negli ultimi decenni hanno offerto nuove prospettive sul ruolo sociale e culturale di alcune specie animali nelle comunità preistoriche. Questo studio esamina 26 denti di squalo a doppia perforazione provenienti da cinque siti archeologici lungo la costa dell’Oman, datati tra la metà del VI e il III millennio a.C. Rinvenuti in contesti che spaziano dagli shell midden neolitici agli insediamenti della prima età del Bronzo, questi manufatti testimoniano una tradizione consolidata di lavorazione e utilizzo. L’analisi morfologica e lo studio delle tracce d’uso sono stati integrati con la spettroscopia infrarossa a trasformata di Fourier (FT-IR) per identificare eventuali residui sui reperti. A completare l’indagine, un test pilota di archeologia sperimentale ha verificato l’ipotesi che questi denti a doppia perforazione fossero impiegati come punte di freccia. Sebbene nei contesti preistorici dell’Oman non vi siano prove dirette dell’uso dell’arco, l’alta frequenza di punte di freccia in selce nei siti neolitici, unita ai risultati della sperimentazione, fornisce un primo supporto a questa interpretazione funzionale.
