Ravenna e il suo fiume. Il fiume Ronco-Bidente nelle foto aeree tra il primo e il secondo dopoguerra

In a well-known but not very thorough passage in the Naturalis Historia (III, xv, 115) Pliny the Elder describes the Ariminus (Marecchia) and the Aprusa (Ausa) as the rivers marking the city of Rimini and the Bedesis (Bidente-Ronco) as the river of the city of Ravenna, although the Montone or Vitis also grazed the city. The Bedesis ran parallel to the coast next to the city before flowing into the Adriatic. The lingering trace of the river is well recognizable and reconstructible through historical cartography, but its course appears clearly-though now in fossil form-in the countryside and urban planning and can be read through a century of IGM and RAF aerial photographs. Here we offer a documented reconstruction of the course of the ancient riverbed, and show the changes that occurred in the 5th century AD.

In un noto quanto poco approfondito passo della “Naturalis Historia” (III, xv, 115) Plinio il Vecchio vede nell’Ariminus (Marecchia) e nell’Aprusa (Ausa) i fiumi che contraddistinguono la città di Rimini e nel Bedesis (Bidente-Ronco) il fiume di Ravenna per eccellenza benché anche il Montone o Vitis sfiorasse la città. Il Bedesis scorreva parallelo alla costa a fianco della città prima di gettarsi in Adriatico. La persistente traccia del fiume è ben riconoscibile e ricostruibile attraverso la cartografia storica, ma il suo andamento appare con evidenza – anche se ormai in forma fossile – nel tessuto urbano ed è leggibile attraverso un secolo di fotografie aeree IGM e RAF. In questa sede viene riconosciuto l’andamento del fiume con le modificazioni intercorse nel V secolo d.C. in conseguenza dell’espansione della città.
