The essay is dedicated to Stanley Cavell's classic The World Viewed. It focuses on the ontology of cinema, which is characterized by skepticism, as we are granted to view the world at the price of our absence from it. I elaborate on some of the themes of Cavell's discussion of modernism: classical Hollywood cinema escapes the fate of modernism, but Cavell characterizes it in terms of a mythological power of expression that can be related to European modernism. Finally, I conclude on the educational and democratic role of cinema as a popular art.
