Chiese del Novecento alla prova del tempo, tra pluralità di approcci e diversificate modalità d’intervento

Twentieth-Century Churches Standing the Test of Time, Between a Variety of Approaches and Diversified Intervention Methods Recently, issues concerning restoration, liturgical and technological adaptation, and those related to the reuse of places of worship, have been addressed and explored on numerous occasions, albeit often with a focus on the most ancient testimonies. This contribution considers some twentieth-century churches that, after their consecration, underwent adaptations and transformations ‒ to maintain their efficiency and to align with contemporary needs and changing tastes ‒ yielding a wide range of outcomes. Indeed, while the communities that identify with and ‘inhabit’ these spaces ensured their consistent upkeep, they sometimes lacked awareness of their figurative and architectural features, which are occasionally undervalued or simply unknown. Specifically, attention is given to the transformations resulting from aesthetic needs and functional and technological adaptations, carried out on some Roman churches around the mid-twentieth century These interventions emphasise how only the understanding and recognising the worth of the works being altered, together with the diligent process of ‘listening’ to the existing structure and all other contributing elements, can lead to quality projects, in responding to the needs and tastes of contemporaneity, without forgetting the reasons of history.

In questi ultimi anni le tematiche connesse al restauro, all’adeguamento liturgico e tecnologico ovvero al riuso degli edifici di culto, sono state affrontate e approfondite in diverse occasioni, seppure quasi sempre con particolare riferimento alle testimonianze più antiche. Il presente contributo si sofferma su alcune chiese realizzate nel corso del Novecento che hanno subito, negli anni seguenti la loro consacrazione, adattamenti e trasformazioni – per mantenerle in efficienza e per adeguarle alle esigenze e ai mutati gusti della contemporaneità – con esiti molto differenziati. Se da un lato, infatti, le comunità che si riconoscono in questi spazi e che li ‘abitano’, ne hanno garantito una costante manutenzione, dall’altro non sempre si sono dimostrate attente alle loro peculiarità figurative e architettoniche, talvolta poco apprezzate o comunque misconosciute. Nello specifico si pone l’attenzione sulle trasformazioni derivanti da necessità di natura estetica e di adeguamento funzionale e tecnologico, condotte su alcune chiese di Roma intorno alla metà del secolo. Tali interventi evidenziano come solo la conoscenza e il riconoscimento del valore delle opere sulle quali si interviene, insieme al paziente lavoro di ‘ascolto’ della preesistenza e di tutte le altre componenti in gioco, possano condurre a progetti di qualità che, nel rispondere ai bisogni e ai gusti della contemporaneità, non dimentichino le ragioni della storia.
