The director Stefano Scialotti recounts the making of his film Maria Lai. Assetata di libertà (Maria Lai. Thirsting for Freedom), based on a 2005 interview with the Italian artist (born in a village in Ogliastra, Sardinia), who is the focus of widespread attention for her research on the potential of thread and weaving both in personal expression and in social relationships. Starting with the Lai’s collaboration on the Sabina Museo dell’olio (Oil Museum) in Castelnuovo di Farfa, where she intervened with peculiar art works and games, the interview expanded to many topics, connected with her vision of art, craftsmanship and creativity. Many years after this interview, the film was completed with footage taken in exhibitions and shown on several occasions. November 2024 through July 2025, the documentary is on display at the exhibition Maria Lai. A Journey to America, curated by Paola Mura, held at Magazzino Italian Art, Cold Spring, New York.
