Giullari marinari: gli strumentisti dell’armata navale ai tempi di Pietro III il Cerimonioso

Instrumental music was part of the soundscape of medieval warfare. This article aims at reconstructing with archival records the musical activities performed at different moments of the life of Catalan galleys during the reign of Peter III the Ceremonious (the launching, the blessing, the activities prior to the embarkation of the crew and the sea voyage), and at showing the professionalism of these instrumentalists, since some of them were active both at court and in the navy. These musical performances formed part of the ceremonialisation of political power, institutionalised by the King of Aragon.
