The analysis commences by comparing the highly successful American series This Is Us (2016-2022) with its Italian adaptation, Noi (2022). The aim is to underscore how the adaptation of a product to a new context not only necessitates linguistic translation but also entails a cultural revision of the original storytelling. This Is Us serves as a narrative antidote to cynicism, employing a structure that intricately weaves together various temporal planes. Through the experiences of the protagonists’ family, the series delves into contemporary social and cultural issues, including racial reflections and discussions on LGBTQIAP+ rights. In Noi the foundational concepts remain the same, yet modifications to the storytelling and character roles result in a narrative that diverges from the original series. Consequently, many of the most captivating elements are lost in the transposition/translation. The adaptation of the American storytelling to the new Italian context led to a change in the narrative itself. This contribution aims to look at how the transposition of a narrative into a distinct cultural milieu necessitates both a cultural and a linguistic adaptation. The comparative analysis of the two series emerges as an opportunity to analyse the methods employed in the translation and adaptation of television series within the contemporary media landscape.
