Ancient grammarians and lexicographers refer to ὠρανίαφι in Alcm. fr. 28 Page as a peculiar vocative, while modern scholars consider ὠρανίαφι a corrupt form or a Mycenaean relic with ablatival function of the ending -φι. This study aims to re-evaluate the ancient sources and argues that ὠρανίαφι can be a poetic creation corresponding to a vocative and modelled by Alcman after epic (mainly Homeric) examples of the same ending.

Abstract

Ancient grammarians and lexicographers refer to ὠρανίαφι in Alcm. fr. 28 Page as a peculiar vocative, while modern scholars consider ὠρανίαφι a corrupt form or a Mycenaean relic with ablatival function of the ending -φι.
