Il serbatoio del chiostro lateranense: un’ipotesi di ricostruzione della fontana duecentesca

Since at least the 19th century, a thirteenth-century marble "tank", which originally belonged to the structure of a lost medieval fountain, has been preserved in the cloister of the Basilica of Saint John Lateran. Today it surmounts a Roman funerary stone with inscriptions and coats of arms added by Giuliano Dati in the first half of the 16th century. The article traces the history of the Lateran tank and proposes a reconstruc- tion of the lost fountain to which it belonged, through a comparison with other similar works that appeared in European cloisters between the 12th and 13th centuries. Considering this and in light of what happened in the Middle Ages in the complex of Saint John, we try to clarify the original position of the fountain, the function and the meaning that it could have had for the canonical community of the Lateran. This is also accompanied by a stylistic analysis of the marble tank, to better define its chronology and its attribution, especially in relation to the Vassalletto cloister.

Nel chiostro della basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano si conserva, almeno fin dall’Ottocento, un serbatoio marmoreo duecentesco, appartenuto in origine alla struttura di una fontana medievale ormai scomparsa. Oggi esso sormonta un cippo funerario romano con iscrizioni e stemmi aggiunti da Giuliano Dati nella prima metà del XVI secolo. L’articolo ripercorre la storia del serbatoio lateranense e presenta un’ipotesi di ricostruzione dell’aspetto originario della fontana perduta cui esso apparteneva, mediante un confronto con altre opere, morfologicamente affini, apparse in contesti claustrali europei tra XII e XIII secolo. In questa prospettiva – e alla luce delle vicende che hanno interessato nel Medioevo il complesso di San Giovanni – si prova a fare chiarezza sulla collocazione originaria della fontana, sulla funzione e sul signifi- cato che essa poteva avere per la comunità canonicale del Laterano. A ciò si affianca un’analisi stilistica del manufatto lapideo, per definire meglio la sua cronologia e la sua paternità, specie in relazione al chiostro dei Vassalletto.
