The Santal uprising, or hul, of 1855, which articulated a new political vision for the creation of an independent Adivasi polity, had an enormous impact on subsequent “tribal” movements in the 19th and early 20th centuries and remains significant in the construction of Adivasi identity today. While numerous research articles address this remarkable event, full-length monographs are few in number, and Peter B. Andersen’s book is an important contribution both to the historiography of Adivasi movements in colonial India and to the construction of contemporary Adivasi identity.

Abstract
The Santal uprising, or hul, of 1855, which articulated a new political vision for the creation of an independent Adivasi polity, had an enormous impact on subsequent “tribal” movements in the 19th and early 20th centuries and remains significant in the construction of Adivasi identity today. While numerous research articles address this remarkable event, full-length monographs are few in number, and Peter B. Andersen’s book is an important contribution both to the historiography of Adivasi movements in colonial India and to the construction of contemporary Adivasi identity.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
