A process for recovering acetic acid and other valuable materials from cellulose acetate waste, which includes the following steps:a) subjecting the cellulose acetate waste from a production process to pyrolysis at a temperature between 370 and 400°C;b) sending the product exiting from pyrolysis and consisting of a mixture of acetic acid and diethyl phthalate to a distillation column for the separation thereof;c) mixing the acetic acid and diethyl phthalate exiting from said distillation column with the incoming feed stream for the traditional production of cellulose acetate, while the solid carbonaceous residue consisting of deacetylated cellulose, exiting from the same distillation column, is usable to partly support the pyrolysis process by the combustion thereof, lowering the carbon emission of the entire plant.

Abstract
