From a comparative literary perspective, this essay locates Guido Gozzano’s cartographic writing of Lapiùbella in a Modernist context and interprets it as an expression of broader transnational tendency that projects onto the imagined island the clash among cosmopolitanism, planetary visions and the subject’s crisis. Starting from Gozzano’s unfound Isle, this essay explores Francis Jammes’ un-actual, post-symbolist islands and Gottfried Benn’s regressive and post-colonial island’s imagery.
